Social media enables users, such as students, parents, school staff, or others, to interact, create, share and communicate online. It includes texting, websites, apps, email, messaging and blogging. Comments, posting and messaging online can impact a school’s reputation and also result in legal liability. This session will review:
• Professional vulnerability with respect to electronic communication.
• Nature of defamation with respect to the reputation of educators and the school.
• Possible criminal law implications.
• Impact of possible discipline regarding inappropriate online communication.
• Steps educators can take to minimize legal risks.
